AVG they say is the best but it has become bloated and slows down a computer and uses a lot of CPU. I switched to Avira because it leaves a very small footprint on the system resources and it does catch things very well.
Dalton, Norton is the worst AV out there for any computer. You want to slow a computer down just use Norton.
If you ever get a virus and take it to a repair-shop, they use this program: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
It has a free version that doesn’t expire, but the feature that constantly scans your computer is limited to one week or 30 days I believe. Try it out. I have never got a virus and remember to use quick scan… it scans important places instead of random documents where a virus wouldn’t be located in.
Don’t underestimate the program.
Just some advice, please watch out what you download. If you go onto an unsafe website, or somebody downloads something on your computer that you think was some sort of a malicious software or ‘malware’, then just start up the program and hit ‘quick scan’. All of your problems will be solved.
PS: Remove Norton if it came with the computer. That virus protection is a big scam.
Microsoft Security Essentials is written by Microsoft especially for Windows and is free. It’s a very good protection. I’ve used it since its inception and have never had any problems. I also use malwarebytes ( free version at .org ) and SUPERAntiSpyware, also free. You can have more than one anti virus protection, just remember to only run one at a time.
I’m going to base my answer on facts, not simply on personal preference. See which of the AV products that have free versions (Avira, Avast, AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials) got the highest detection rate, least false positives and the fastest scan engine:http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/st…
Tested using 200,000 recent/prevalent malware samples where 82.7% were trojans, 10% were backdoor exploits, 4.7% were worms and 2.7% were other malware/virus:
Avast
Detection rate — 97.3%; Missed — 1.6%
Scan speed — 16.4 megabytes/sec.
False positives — very few
Avira
Detection rate — 99.5%; Missed — 2.5%
Scan speed — 12.3 megabytes/sec.
False positives — very few
AVG
Detection rate — 95.7%; Missed — 8.6%
Scan speed — 11.6 megabytes/sec.
False positives — many
Microsoft Security Essentials
Detection rate — 92.3%; Missed — 4.2%
Scan speed — 7.1 megabytes/sec.
False positives — very few
By looking at the results, you will find that your best choices among the free AV products would be either Avast or Avira.http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-down…http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antiv…
However, if you don’t mind paying for antivirus protection, I would suggest that you get G Data (it uses two scan engines — Avast and BitDefender — which is why it has the highest detection rate), Bit Defender or Kaspersky, but they all require annual subscription fees.
If you want additional real-time protection against spyware, get the Pro version of MBAM. It only costs $24.95 for a lifetime license. You can try out the pro version of MBAM free for 14 days. It can be combined with any antivirus product as it is just an antispyware. Nowadays, you should have both an antivirus and an antispyware as most AVs can’t detect spyware.
I’d go with Avast! or AVG. If the computer came with norton, REMOVE IT. It is a total waste of time, money, and computer power. Norton does NOTHING and ruins EVERYTHING. Also, Norton is expensive. AVG and Avast both have free versions, along with Avira.
norton antivirus is excellent, i have always used it. It`s really cool too
how could anything be better for microsoft programs than microsoft sercurity essentials
