a tea spoon of baking powder in the mixture before it goes into the oven. this will help it rise. if you put to much in it will spill over the sides of the baking tin/tray.

Baking powder if your batter contains butter and milk. 1 1/2 tea spoons per 1 cup flower.
Baking Soda if your batter contains water oil and chocolate. 1 tea spoons per 1 cup flower.
You will find them in the baking section of the supermarket. Even in packets for one time use. Make sure they are fresh by checking the expiration date.
