Webcam Hacking Is Scaring Me, Is It That Common?

By AntiVirus Posted in: AVG Anti-Virus

I know it’s common that my webcam gets hacket if i use skype, yahoo or msn messenger but Can someone hack into webcam when I’m using it even if it’s an application that doesn’t require internet connection like software that uses the webcam to capture photos and videos ? heck , can someone hack my webcam evven if I’m not using it at all ?? my computer is in my bedroom so yeah that would that would be very scary :S
(I have a secured wireless internet conection with a password using a very good ISP and I’ve had AVG anti virus since forever, I hear people now saying that it’s crappy)

Mousing over the wrong type of web link can possibly cause a trojan which would allow someone access to your machine and possible enable them access to any devices on the machine (webcam, printer, and network). There is no guaranteed way to 100% avoid this type of malware. The best advice is to stay off questionable websites.
There is no such thing as a secured wireless internet. Any wireless can be cracked, it just depends on how fast. I’ve cracked my own network with WEP security in not even 5 minutes, much of which could of been cut down if i new more linux. WPA can be cracked as well, just not as fast and more requirements.
    ISP is almost irrelevant.
AVG, at least in my experience, isn’t as good as some of the other options. If you are interested in others that tend to be better rated (and free), then you can try: Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast, or Avira. Also make sure to not just have antivirus (such as those I listed), but also anti-malware as well (such as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware).
EDIT: the best thing you can do is to close the webcam shutter if it has one or just cover it with something (electrical tape works decently but may leave residue over time) when it is not in use.

Yes, if you are infected by a trojan or botnet, the attacker can power on the cam (even if not connected to internet), save the recording in a file in the HDD and send it to the attacker when you get connected to the internet, or if you are connected to internet he can watch you in real-time. Best is to put something over the cam when you are not really using it and remove it when you want to chat with friends. Also make sure the led of the cam is only powered on when you are actually using the cam, else someonw is spying on you!

I have AVG and it seems good to me, not really let me down. I use avg and mbam (malware bytes anti malware) work perfectly it all really depends on personal preference but in my opinion stick with avg and install malware bytes as they have helped me in the past.

The first answer is retarded it’s very common, If you unplug your internet they can’t connect to your computer to do it………
