The rise of the Industrial Revolution led to the employment of unskilled labour (including children) in factories and mills. There were serious issues regarding safety, abuse, accidents and death in the workplace.
People concerned about the welfare of children started the ‘Sunday School Movement’ aimed at helping children learn to read and write and give them a better future. Classes were held on Sunday as this was the usual only day off work the children could enjoy.
One notable occasion which turned legislation around was a fire at a clothing factory in New York.
A result was the tightening of safety legislation and enforcement along with laws to protect children in/from the workplace.
The movement to form labour unions also gained impetus at this time.
