Best Place To Put A Gpu Pci Slot Fan? On Top Or Below?

By AntiVirus Posted in: RISING

So after doing some research on this forum and other sites I’ve decided I’m going to get a PCI slot exhaust fan for my GPU but I’m wondering where would be the most effective spot for it; Below the GPU (though I’m thinking that may starve the GPU’s intake fan of air) or above the GPU (because that layer of green metal on which the GPU sits isn’t that thick and also since heat rises I’m pretty certain that this would at least take heat away from the top of the GPU)?

The circuit board (the “green metal”) is a very effective insulator: it’s mostly made out of fiber glass that is commonly used as loft insulation. Don’t bank on much heat passing through it. That would indicate below the card. However, personally I wouldn’t bother because the two sides of a fan are not equivalent – the intake side draws air gently from a wide area on that side of the fan. The exhaust side blows a concentrated and focused stream of air. As a result exhaust fans help to move air through the case generally, but to cool down a specific component you want something blowing ON to that component rather than away from it.

The GPU fan usually blows air onto the heatsink, to cool it. Blowing extra air in the same direction will help keep the heatsink even cooler. That’s my vote…

If your card is running really hot it’s probably clogged up with dust. Take off the fan shroud and blow some canned air through the cooling fins. This should dislodge and dust blocking airflow.

I don’t know what forum told you to get a PCI slot fan.
You really need to list what card you have. These cards with a turbine cooler that toward the back push all of the hot air out of the case. The cards with dual fans or a single fan toward the center dump a lot of the air inside of the case.
If you really wanted to keep your cards cool then you need a decent 120mm or better fan that’s blowing fresh air onto the cards. When you have more air being blown into your case that creates a psitive pressure situation, which causes air to find a way out of your case. Adding this fan would create a negative situation.
Anyway, since the fans on the card are causing the air to be blown downward, you would put the slot cooler underneath. I’m not so sure if you will see the benefit you’re looking for. If you really want to keep the cards cool you need to have fresh air entering the case via a case fan.
