Anti-virus Program Help!! Program Unresponsive, What Do I Do!?

ok so I have Webroot Anti Virus with Spy Sweeper.. I’m pretty sure it’s the 2011 edition.
But anyway I’ve had it forevery timeut now everytime I load it up I get a loading screen one part says “Establishing communications” and that loads fully
but the second part says “Collecting System Status” and this is the part that fails to load.
Plus when I try to click Notifications, settings etc I get a pop up window saying it’s become unresponsive and to wait or close it. I’ve tried each one with no luck.
When I try to scan from the icon button it starts but it never truly starts or finishes.
Please help me I need it to work because I think I have a virus!!
P.S. In the future what are some better Anti-Virus programs???

    Microsoft’s free program works very well. I had a paid version of Trend Micro and it missed things that microsoft’s program found. Here is a link to the free download. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windo…

    Have you tried other options? Try AVG or Norton. I have a Mac so I need to pay for most virus scanners, so I really can’t help you out. Sorry
